Williams for Saracens

08/03/02.Rumours are circulating in the English media that Leinster & Ireland A coach, Matt Williams is set to move to Zurich Premership side Saracens.

Williams (pictured), has made a huge impression since arriving in Ireland two seasons ago. He was originally brought into the Leinster camp by Mike Ruddock and took over the reins when Ruddock returned home to coach Ebbw Vale and Wales A.

Since then Williams has transformed Leinster into a formidable side who won the inaugural Celtic League trophy and reached the quarter final of the Heineken Cup, topping what was arguably the toughest pool.

The former NSW Waratahs’ coach was used by the Irish senior management last season and this term was appointed coach to the Ireland A side who then went on to win the Triple Crown playing a brand of attacking football which has become a trademark of Williams’ Leinster side.

With Francois Pienaar’s departure from Vicarage Road, Saracens were left with a huge void to fill and it was thought that it might be filled by South African Tim Lane. However Lane has intimated that he is not interested and it would seem natural that the English club should approach a coach with Williams’ track record.

However, Leinster PRO Tom McCormack, said, “a coach of Williams’ calibre is naturally on a lot of people’s list.” and refused to comment further on what he termed “pure speculation.”
