Munster Senior Cup for Shannon

18/05/02. Penalties in the second period of added time from Tommy Cregan gave Shannon a 23-17 victory over Young Munster in the final of the Aubars Munster Senior Cup at Thomond Park

The Shannon victory came after it looked that Munsters had done just about enough as they led 17-14 with the game entering the third minute of injury time. Then they conceded a penalty yards inside their own half and up stepped Tommy Cregan to land the kick and send the game into added time.

Almost inevitably, Cregan then tagged on two more penalties, both in the second period of extra time and the second of those from the half way line to send Young Munster home dejected. It was the conclusion of a masterclass from Cregan who scored all his side’s points, six penalties and a try.

Shannon opened with a Cregan penalty and try to race into an eight point lead but three Mike Lynch penalties left Munster in front at the break. They extended their lead – after Cregan had landed his second penalty – when Mike Lynch scored a Munsters try and that seemed a decisive score until Cregan struck late to force the extra time.
