Fly-half Eoghan Hickey claimed 33 points as Ireland overcame Fiji 63-10 in their second IRB U21 World Cup game. The match was played in front of 500 spectators at the RAU Stadium in South Africa.
Four first half penalties from Eoghan Hickey and his conversion of Conor Hartigan’s 28th minute try had Ireland 19-0 points up before Fiji got their first scores on the board. The try, from wing Sailosi Tagicakibau, only served to spur the Irish to further effort and they ended the half with two further Hickey penalties and a Shane Jennings try to lead 32-7 at half time.
From the restart it was all Ireland. Martin McPhail scored a try after seven minutes and three minutes later, Hartigan scored his second. Brian O’Riordan and Rory Best added their names to the scoresheet before Hickey capped a marvelous performance when he converted his own try in the final minute of the game.
In a game played earlier, Australia defeated Romania 135-0, the second time in successive games that the Romanians have conceded 135 points. On Friday next Ireland play hosts South Africa in Ellis Park Stadium.
