IRFU Voice Concern Over Government Action

The IRFU has voiced its concern about Government proposals to list certain sporting events including Ireland’s matches in the Six Nations Championship.

In a statement issued yesterday, Thursday July 17th, it was stated that, “The Irish Rugby Football Union is concerned that the Government is considering listing Ireland’s matches in the Six Nations Championship, thus severely diminishing the Union’s negotiating powers for its most valuable asset.”

The IRFU has always taken a responsible approach to the television coverage of its prime properties and will continue to do so.”

“It is important that the well being of rugby at all levels is considered within this debate. It is imperative that should the Government press forward with this recommendation that it ensures a responsible approach to rugby is adopted.”

“The future of rugby in Ireland at all levels is dependent on the financial well being of the IRFU and revenues generated by the sale of television rights are fundamental. Any legislation, which poses a threat in this regard, is of concern.”
