Leinster went one step closer to realising their dream of a place in the Heineken Cup Final with a courageous 12-9 win over Monteferrand to ensure themselves a spot in the quarter-finals
Monteferrand opened the scoring with a penalty early in the first half, which was soon negated by a Brian O’ Meara penalty after five minutes to bring the score to 3-3.
The sides remained even until O Meara scored again to bring the score to 6-3 but by half time Monteferrand held a three point advantage thanks to two further Gerard Merceron penalties.
Again in the second half, all the points were scored from penalty kicks, with Leinster and Monteferrand trading points until Leinster emerged victors on a scoreline of 12-9. Leinster remain top of their group, undefeated to date in their Heineken Cup campaign.
In other action tonight, a late try from USA international backrower Dave Hodges gave Llanelli a 17-12 victory over Sharks in a tense and often bad-tempered Heineken Cup pool encounter at Stradey Park. Glasgow also secured a win over Bourgoin with a mere one point margin at Hughenden. (source planetrugby.com)
