Ulster destroyed a poor Glasgow side by 33 points to 6 at Ravenhill,
while Llanelli’s Gareth Bowen was the star of the show in Thomond Park
where Munster lost to Llanelli 19-12.

Ulster got off to a great start with summer recruit Rowan Frost bursting through
for a fine try after six minutes which was converted by fly-half Adam Larkin.
Stuart Moffat opened Glasgow’s account with a 25th minute drop goal after the
Ulster line had been threatened. Larkin put seven points between the teams again
on the half-hour but Calvin Howarth quickly struck back with a penalty for Glasgow.

Then the Ulster pack produced another great drive in the 34th minute which
concluded with skipper Andy Ward crashing over for a try. Larkin was able to
add three further penalties to extend the home team’s advantage. Ulster continued
to dominate in the closing minutes and Shane Stewart produced a fine break to
claim the home team’s third try in the 77th minute.

In Thomond Park Munster’s undefeated run was ended by Llanelli. Jeremy Staunton
successfully kicked a penalty in the seventh minute, but the Scarlets spent
the next 23 minutes camped deep inside the Munster 22. Llanelli out-half Gareth
Bowen and Munster’s Jeremy Staunton swapped penalties to close out the first
half, 6-3 in Munster’s favor.

The second half saw more of the same with Bowen & Staunton kicking score for
score until it stood at 9-9, before Bowen charged-down a clearance kick from
fly-half Killian Keane to follow through for the game’s only try. Bowen converted
his own and try and staunton managed a late penalty kick to bring it to 16-12,
but an injury time kick from Bowen gave Llanelli a 19-12 win.
