Thirty three points without reply left Ulster on top of Pool 1 in the Heineken Cup after they had absolutely destroyed Leicester Tigers at a full to capacity Ravenhill. on Sunday. A superb display by Andy Ward’s team sent Leicester crashing to what has to be termed a humiliating defeat, the foundation of which was set in the first half when Ulster, with the gale at their backs, built up a 28-0 lead. They scored three excellent tries, – two for the outstanding Andy Ward – the opener from Tyrone Howe after 11 minutes after David Humphreys had delivered an inch-perfect chip into the corner.

From then on Ulster made the most of every opportunity and if the game wasn’t over at half-time, given that Leicester had the wind in the second half, it most certainly was four minutes after the restart when Paddy Wallace cut loose from outside his own 22 and delivered the scoring pass to Shane Stewart for the fourth try.

After that it was just a case of Ulster defending and this they did comfortably against a clueless and inept Leicester onslaught of sorts.

None of the traditional areas of strength worked for the Tigers. Their set piece was awful. They had an out-half who wouldn’t get a game in the AIL and they had the misfortune to lose both centres Ollie Smith and Daryl Gibson within ten minutes of the kick-off. They also had the misfortune to come up against an Ulster team who were spot-on for this game and if Gibson and Smith had remained on the field, the outcome wouldn’t have been different. This was a game this gallant Ulster side were never going to lose.
