Ireland scrum half Peter Stringer today had a scan on his right thumb, injured while playing against England at Twickenham on Saturday last.

It
showed damage to a tendon and the thumb has been put in plaster.
It will be removed on Tuesday next when a decision will be taken as
to his
availability for consideration to play against Italy in the RBS Six
Nations
championship at Lansdowne Road on Saturday week.

Irish coach Eddie O’Sullivan remains optimistic about Stringer’s
prospects,
saying: The prognosis is good. The plaster is to immobilise the
thumb and
give it a better chance of recovery. We remain hopeful he will be fit
to
play.
