Their nearest rival, second placed Greystones – just two points off the pace – have a home tie against lowly Corinthians and anything other than five points for the home is side is hard to imagine.

For their part, Instonians can still make the play-offs although their morale for Saturday’s game may be low following their 39-8 hammering in Dr Hickey Park last weekend.

As thing stand there are four northern clubs with genuine designs on that fourth play-off spot although third placed Ards are by no means certain of qualification and could see their position change after a visit to City of Derry.

At the dismal end of the table, it’s backs to the wall for Naas after they suffered a hard to understand 38-6 defeat in Ballina at the weekend. On Saturday, Naas are home to Connemara, a game they simply must win and after that it’s a question of hoping that Portadown come unstuck although with home advantage over Suttonians Portadown should secure the points to keep them up. Last game for Naas will be a trip to Greystones, no place to visit looking for succour.
