On March 27th, 2004 at Lansdowne Road, in front of a delirious home crowd, Ireland won the Triple Crown for the seventh time. It was just reward for Eddie O’Sullivan’s team, who snuffed out a potential Welsh revival in their first leg, vanquished World Champions England in Twickenham to bring them one step closer and justified their self-belief in ultimately beating Scotland at Lansdowne Road to win their first Triple Crown in nineteen years.
Ireland won the Triple Crown for the first time in 1894 when they beat Wales 3-0 in the decider in Belfast. Five years later in 1899 the deciding victory was also against Wales, this time in Cardiff.
It took almost fifty years before Ireland won the Grand Slam and the Triple Crown in 1948, with the peerless Jack Kyle at outhalf. The following year, 1949, Ireland retained the Triple Crown, yet again beating Wales this time in St. Helens.
Another long wait of thirty three years elapsed before Ollie Campbell kicked all 21pts against Scotland to win Ireland’s fifth Triple Crown at Lansdowne Road and three years later Ireland won it again in a thrilling finish, beating England 13-10 in a famous last minute victory.
Disc 1A comprehensive account of Ireland’s winning season of 2004, including interviews with players and coaches and highlights of all the try-scoring action.
Disc 2The entire Ireland v England clash at Twickenham, when the World Champions met their match in the Men in Green.
