Johnny O’Connor has made a successful return from his Achilles injury, completing two matches in the last week, to extend Ireland’s openside flanker options.

With Keith Gleeson having his operation to have the pins inserted into his leg yesterday, it’s welcome news that another out and out openside is now back in the frame.

O’Connor first outing since his long-term injury was in a match of literally two halves last Saturday for Wasps. The first half was against London Welsh, the second against Henley. O’Connor even managing to get on the scoresheet in a comprehensive win (or wins!).

He also played for Wasps against Llanelli last night in the Zurich Anglo-Celtic Challenge. O’Connor packed down alongside Joe Worsley and Lawrence Dallaglio in a match won 20-17 by Wasps, thereby worsening the already dire overcrowding problem in the Wasps trophy cabinet.
