AIB LEAGUE: DIVISION ONE:
Dublin University 14 Belfast Harlequins 41, College Park
Scorers: Dublin Uni: Tries: Matt Crockett, Paul Doran-Jones; Cons: Johnny Watt 2
Harlequins: Tries: Reece Spee, Andy Ward 2, Jonny Lowe, Rob Devonshire; Cons: Michael Glancy 5; Pens: Glancy 2
Belfast Harlequins kept the heat on Division One’s top three sides as they ran in five tries for a well-merited win over Dublin University.
‘Quins maintained fourth spot as they gradually wore the students down at College Park.
The rout began on 15 minutes when scrum-half Reece Spee mustered an intercept score. Spee’s halfback partner Michael Glancy converted and added two penalties for a 13-0 interval lead.
Tries from Rob Devonshire, Jonny Lowe and a brace for player-coach Andy Ward handed ‘Quins their bonus point. Captain and hooker Matt Crockett and replacement prop Paul Doran Jones grabbed consolations for Trinity. Johnny Watt converted both.
Ballymena 24 Garryowen 28, Eaton Park
Scorers: Ballymena: Tries: Michael McComish, Paddy Wallace; Con: Wallace; Pens: Wallace 3; Drop: Wallace
Garryowen: Tries: Cillian O’Boyle 2, Adam O’Loughlin; Cons: Conor Kilroy 2; Pens: Kilroy 2; Drop: Kilroy
Garryowen remain a single point behind Division One leaders Shannon after a late blitz saw them take the spoils at Eaton Park.
A late converted try from Cillian O’Boyle and Conor Kilroy’s injury-time drop goal saw the Limerick men to victory.
Garryowen grabbed early tries through wingers O’Boyle and Adam O’Loughlin, but a Michael McComish effort, allied to three Paddy Wallace penalties, pushed the hosts 16-15 in front.
Into the second half, Wallace gathered a chip over the top from Dirkie Strydom to touch down in the corner. However, O’Boyle and Kilroy had the final say for high-flying visitors.
Buccaneers 13 Shannon 21, Dubarry Park
Scorers: Buccaneers: Try: David Quinlan; Con: Tommy Cregan; Pens: Cregan 2
Shannon Tries: Mossie Lawlor, Les Hogan; Con: Dave Delaney; Pens: Delaney 3
Dave Quinlan’s try was not enough to prevent his former club Shannon from earning their seventh straight win of the Division One campaign at Dubarry Park.
Buccs failed to avenge last season’s 56-3 humbling by the Limerick giants despite the best efforts of Quinlan and his ex-Shannon cohorts Tommy Cregan and Brian Buckley.
Shannon led 21-3 thanks to two Dave Delaney penalties and two tries in the space of seven first half minutes from full-back Mossie Lawlor and prop Les Hogan.
Quinlan’s 37th-minute try helped Buccs reduce the deficit back to eight points, but a scoreless second half scuppered their chances.
Dungannon 18 County Carlow 13, Stevenson Park
Scorers: Dungannon: Oisin Hennessey, Tyrone Howe; Con: Gareth Steenson; Pens: Steenson 2
Carlow: Try: Ross Jackson; Con: Greg Jacob; Pens: Jacob 2
Dungannon got back to winning ways in Division One as two tries helped them past struggling County Carlow at Stevenson Park.
Up-and-coming back row Oisin Hennessey and former Ireland and Lions winger Tyrone Howe touched down in either half to set ‘Gannon up for their fourth win – a success which sees them up to sixth in the table.
The midlanders had led 10-7 at the break – Ross Jackson grabbed a converted try, which was added to by a penalty from Greg Jacob.
‘Gannon shifted 18-10 in front thanks to two Gareth Steenson penalties, early on in the second half and Howe’s effort, but Jacob’s second penalty deservedly earned a bonus point for the relegation-threatened visitors.
Howe’s try was the move of the match on 61 minutes. Campbell Feather made the initial break through the middle, scrum half James Bates ferried it onto Steenson and the fly-half put Howe haring in at the left corner.
