UCD fly half Eoghan Hickey kicked three crucial penalties as the students got the better of Buccaneers, winning 23-20 at Belfield.

AIB LEAGUE: DIVISION ONE: Saturday, January 28

UCD 23 BUCCANEERS 20, Belfield

Scorers: UCD: Tries: David Blaney, Michael Fanning; Cons: Eoghan Hickey 2; Pens: Hickey 3

Buccaneers: Tries: Ted Robinson, Paddy O’Sullivan; Cons: Tom Cregan, Paul Warwick; Pens: Cregan 2

The sides shared out two tries apiece but Hickey edged his kicking duel with Buccs full-back Tom Cregan, who uncharacteristically had an off-day with the boot, kicking two penalties and a conversion.

Leinster hooker David Blaney touched down from a lineout maul on 10 minutes to set UCD up, but a Ted Robinson try helped Buccs go in level at 13-all at the break.

A flowing backline move put winger Michael Fanning in for UCD’s second try, and although Buccs cancelled that out, Connacht fly half Paul Warwick missed an injury-time penalty to win it for the Pirates.

The win sees UCD into sixth, six points behind Belfast Harlequins, the side above them. Buccs’ fourth defeat in five games has them struggling in eleventh.

GALWEGIANS 11 UL BOHEMIANS 13, Crowley Park

Scorers: Galwegians: Try: Michael Swift; Pens: David Slemen 2

UL Bohs: Try: Kenny Barry; Con: Ben Martin; Pen: Martin; Drop: Fergal Lawlor

Connacht fly half David Slemen missed a late penalty chance as UL Bohemians held on for a dramatic win at Crowley Park.

Bohs are up to seventh in the Division One standings after their fourth win in five games.

A push over try from lock Kenny Barry helped the visitors end the first half 8-3 in front. Ben Martin, playing at full-back in the injury-enforced absence of Under-21 international Ian Hanly, had kicked a penalty for Bohs, while Slemen replied at the other end.

A try from Connacht flanker Michael Swift gave ‘Wegians added hope in the second half, but a drop goal from fly half Fergal Lawlor put Bohs back into the lead. With no tries forthcoming, ‘Wegians and Slemen were afforded an injury-time chance to win it by his lengthy effort tailed away.
