Pictured above: Flanker Simon Easterby bides his time on the bench after being sin-binned by referee Nigel Whitehouse, 68 minutes into the action at Twickenham. Coach Eddie O’Sullivan said, having watched Andy Goode kick the resultant penalty for a 21-21 score line: “I thought we were in big trouble but we showed a lot of heart, got Simon back onto the pitch and that proved to be the difference.”

Replacement Girvan Dempsey, back at the venue of his famous try in the 2004 defeat to England, tries to get a late attack going with Brian O’Driscoll and David Wallace in support.

Brian O’Driscoll has Johnny O’Connor, another of the replacements used, in support as Lewis Moddy and RBS 6 Nations man of the match Andy Goode tackle the Irish skipper.

The most important try of Shane Horgan’s six year-international career. The Drogheda man nabs his second try of the evening, third of the 6 Nations campaign and 16th in all as he stretches over to score in the right corner despite a last gasp tackle from Lewis Moody.

England’s replacement scrum half Matt Dawson can only look on as Horgan dots down at the corner flag.

Horgan, who was forced to wait for confirmation of his late try from the television match official Huw Watkins, said afterwards: “I was pretty confident that I had scored. Especially when ROG (Ronan O’Gara) jumped on me and starting roaring – that sort of made me a little bit more confident! I wasn’t sure until I saw the video afterwards and I think it looked pretty conclusive.”

Replacement lock Donncha O’Callaghan jumps for joy as Shane Horgan’s last-gasp try in awarded by referee Nigel Whitehouse. Ronan O’Gara’s touchline conversion was the icing on the cake for Ireland.
