IRELAND have named their ten player squad to travel to France at the end of the month to take part in the FIRA Euopean Sevens Competition.

It will be the first time Ireland will have competed in any sevens competition at a national level. The Irish squad includes senior skipper Sarahjane Belton and scrum-halves Louise Beamish and Tania Rosser. Leinster flanker Orla Brennan is one of three forwards in the squad, with Joy Neville and Rachel Boyd – also backrowers – named as well.

The competition is being held in Limoges on May 26-27. Ireland are placed in Division A where there are 16 countries competing. They will face Sweden, Norway and Russia in their pool games.

International Sevens for the Irish Women’s Rugby Union could became a major focus in the coming years as recently the International Rugby Board (IRB) has announced that women will have their own Rugby World Cup Sevens, taking place alongside the men’s event in the same host city.

The venue for the 2009 tournament has yet to be decided on.
