BRIAN O’DRISCOLL: POST-MATCH COMMENTS
– ON THE 27-17 DEFEAT –
“I’d like to think it is going to make us just a little bit hungrier. This team has really moved on in the last couple of years. We don’t accept mediocrity or close losses.
“We found ourselves within touching distance of the All Blacks going into the last few minutes and we kind of let them off the hook in a way. You could see in the dressing room the disappointment in the boys’ faces, now that there are two big opportunities that passed us by. And you don’t know when the next opportunity against them is going to come.
“When we got within three points (20-17) we really felt we had them on the rack.
“We just came up with a couple of silly errors at crucial times that punished us. It was a hard-fought Test match and the fact that we didn’t manage to grind it out in the end is a huge disappointment.”
– ON THE POSITIVES –
“Sure you can take some positives out of the way we did play, but you look at the bigger picture that we didn’t win and we felt we should have at least won one of these Test matches.
“I think when you’re 17 points down after half an hour, you don’t have anything to lose. You just go out and play rugby and that’s what we did. It really showed the fighting spirit of this team to be able to play our way back into the game as we did.
“We’ve grown over the last two or three years into that side and we showed an element of it in the French game when we were well down and were able to fight back, fight back and fight back, so I think it’s a good trait. But it’s a lot easier when you don’t go 17 points down.”
