The Leicester Tigers flanker said afterwards: “New that we have been a part of this Churchill Cup we want to come back again and win it. We kind of let ourselves down against the Maori when we lost to them in Santa Clara, but we won’t make that mistake if we come back again.”

Ireland ‘A’ players celebrate as Leinster prop Ronan McCormack, on as a replacement, is awarded the match-winning try in the seventh minute of injury-time.

Leinster number eight Jamie Heaslip, who was arguably the stand-out player for Ireland ‘A’ during the tournament, takes the ball into contact at the Commonwealth Stadium.

Praising his side’s unquestionable spirit and will to win, Ireland ‘A’ coach Michael Bradley said: “Ireland beat England in the last minute to win the Triple Crown this year, so our guys are used to winning late in games and they just didn’t want to let it go today.”

Ulster lock Matt McCullough competes with the Saxons’ Nick Kennedy at a lineout.
