The IRFU would like to offer its sincere condolences to the family of Brian McLoughlin who died on Tuesday morning after a long illness.

Brian attended Blackrock College where he captained the school to their 50th Senior Cup title success from the number eight position in 1964.

He later captained Blackrock College RFC in three different seasons and held the position of Chairman of the Rugby Committee for many years. Having qualified with a BA degree from University College Dublin, Brian became a solicitor and established a thriving legal practice in Bray, Co. Wicklow.

Brian captained Leinster Schools and subsequently went on to coach the Leinster Senior representative side for two seasons from 1990-’92. He also worked with both the IRB and ERC in a disciplinary capacity and attended the 2003 Rugby World Cup as a disciplinary officer. He was the Chairman of the Leinster Team Management Committee for the past three years which oversees the running of the professional game.

Brian had a great interest in all sports and was a member of Killiney Golf Club. Brian is survived by his wife Vonnie (Veronica) and his three children Kyra, Lynn and Stephen.

Speaking on Tuesday, Leinster Chief Executive Michael Dawson said: It was with great sadness that I learned of Brian’s death today after his long illness. Brian was a man of great humour and was someone who readily gave his time freely for the game of rugby. He was hugely respected both in Leinster and across the country and his passing will leave a massive void for his family and many friends. Our thoughts are with his wife Vonnie and children at this difficult time.
