Rugby Stars Support Temple St. Walkathon
Ireland and Munster Rugby Stars Frankie Sheahan, Denis Leamy, Ronan O’Gara and Mick O’Driscoll are putting their best foot forward for Temple St. Children’s Hospital.
Ireland‘s Rugby stars visited the Sherry FitzGerald offices to launch the Cork route of the Sherry FitzGerald Walkathon 2007 in aid of Temple Street Children’s University Hospital – Your Home Away From Home project. The walkathon aims to be Ireland’s largest with simultaneous 10k walks taking place in Dublin, Cork, Galway and Limerick on Sunday 29th April 2007.
The Sherry FitzGerald “Your Home Away From Home” project was launched in early 2006 to assist Temple Street Children’s Hospital in purchasing a house on Fontenoy Street in Dublin 7 for use as parent’s accommodation. The house will provide, for the first time in Temple Street’s long and distinguished history, a practical support structure for families from outside Dublin whose children are attending Temple Street, often with very serious illnesses.
Each year, 4,000 children from outside Dublin attend Temple Street Children’s University Hospital. The parents and family of these children often have to travel long distances and stay overnight in Dublin while their child receives treatment in Temple Street.
Currently, Temple Street has fifteen small camp beds in wards available to parents who wish to stay beside their child rather than travelling to places such as Donegal, Mayo and Kerry. On any given night, Temple Street has a waiting list of up to 20 people waiting for a bed. The apartment will be a huge improvement for families.
