Navan’s Double Trouble

This Saturday will be a historic day for Navan RFC with teams from the Meath club in two finals but it does present a transport problem.

Navan rugby club looks set to be “split” on gender lines this weekend, though not if PRO Gerry Williamson has anything to do with it. With their first team competing in the Provincial Towns Cup final at Cill Dara RFC and their Ladies side in action in Portlaoise, there will be “a lot of Navan cars and buses on the M7 on Saturday,” according to Gerry.

Saturday will be a historic day for the club. First up are the Navan Ladies team who will be contesting the Women’s All-Ireland League Division Two final against Clonmel at Portlaoise RFC with a 1pm kick-off. The winning team move up to Division One for next season.

After the game, Navan supporters have to dash up the M7 motorway to Cill Dara RFC for the RE/MAX Provincial Towns Cup final between Navan and Skerries with kick-off at 3.30 pm.
This will be the 14th time that both clubs have appeared in a final of the “Towns Cup” variety. The Navan team have already qualified for next season’s AIB Junior Cup by finishing third behind Naas (the AIB League Round Robin series winners) and Seapoint (the AIB Junior Cup winners) in this season’s Leinster League Division One.

For the record, Navan have won the Towns Cup on eight occasions, while they have been runners-up five times with their last cup win back in 2000. Skerries have won it 11 times and lost twice with their last cup success in 1979.
