Queen’s Host Community Tag Rugby Festival

More than 100 pupils from eight local primary schools took part in the first ever Community Tag Rugby Festival at Queen’s University Belfast’s Physical Education Centre on Thursday. See below for further details.

Children had the opportunity to take part in mixed 7-a-side matches, competitions, challenges and Fair play workshops. The event was organised by the recently established South Belfast Sports Forum through Belfast City Council’s Support for Sport Fund with support from the IRFU’s Ulster Branch.

Explaining the ethos of the event, Queen’s Sport’s Kevin Murray said: “Taking part in PE and sport has many advantages, such as developing a healthy lifestyle, learning new skills and having fun. This event shows that sport can also help children respect fellow players, referees, opponents and help develop an understanding of sportsmanship.”

All primary schools received three weeks of quality IRFU-accredited coaching as part of their PE programme in the lead-up to this event.

Fergus Cole, a Primary 7 teacher from St Matthew’s PS, added: “The coaching and organisation of today’s event was of a very high standard. We are very privileged to be part of this particular programme and other sporting initiatives at Queen’s.”
