Bertie Boosts Brian

The Ireland squad received a VIP guest on Tuesday to wish them well before they depart for the World Cup in France. Taoiseach Bertie Ahern visited Brian O’Driscoll and the players.

The Ireland squad continued their training preparations at St. Gerard’s School in Bray yesterday. Brian O’Driscoll stepped up his training through a rugby fitness session, but stayed out of contact as he recovers from the fractured sinus he received 12 days ago.

Flanker David Wallace was also on the field as the Ireland medical staff continue to oversee his recovery from the chronic ankle problem that has limited his training, but again yesterday he was put through his paces with a tough fitness session.

Paddy Wallace did sit out training as he rested a bruised hip he received in training on Monday and so was kept away from contact yesterday to let the hip recover.

Following the morning training session, the Ireland squad were treated to a visit by An Taoiseach Bertie Ahern who met with the players and management to wish them the best of luck for the World Cup in the weeks ahead. An Taoiseach was presented with an Ireland team jersey and also a signed rugby ball by coach Eddie O’Sullivan and team captain O’Driscoll.

Eddie O’Sullivan said: “It was another great boost for the squad to get to meet the Taoiseach as it gave the players a further indication of how much the whole of Ireland is behind us for the tournament. It also showed how much the Rugby World Cup is in the minds of everybody in the country and that it is going to be a massive sporting occasion.

“The Taoiseach wished us luck and hopefully he may be able to attend some of the games along with the many thousands of Irish fans who are making the trip.”
