Wheelchair Team Points The Way

The Irish Wheelchair Rugby team returned home victorious from France and have pointed the way for Eddie O’Sullivan’s Ireland team for their World Cup clash with les Bleus on Friday.

With two wins from two over France in the exhibition games to highlight Wheelchair Rugby, the Irish team have set a high standard for Eddie O’Sullivan’s charges to live up to on Friday.

Craig McMillan describes how the Wheelchair Rugby matches went:

“Both games were extremely competitive, the French had improved considerably since the last time the Irish squad faced them in an international encounter three years ago. Ireland have also improved greatly since then, so this led to a very entertaining and competitive fixture on both days of competition.

“The games were played outdoors in front of the historical landmark of the Louvre. This spectacular location enabled the huge crowds to enjoy the occasion amid the Rugby World Cup fever which had gripped the city of Paris.

“Wheelchair Rugby is normally played indoors on a hard surface, and in fact the two matches against the French turned out to be the first International matches to be played outdoors in the history of the sport. This added another dimension to the uniqueness of the event, enabling the exciting sport of Wheelchair Rugby to be brought to the spectators and allowing them to get behind their respective teams to cheer them on.

“The French supporters were very passionate about their sport, but we were not outdone as Ireland had plenty of support already within the city ahead of the union match this Friday and this was heard and encouraged the players on the court.”
