The Connacht women’s team will face international opposition of an unusual nature when they host the Lithuanian national women’s wide next Saturday at the Sportsground.
The game will serve as a good opportunity for Connacht to gear up for their Interprovincial play-off the following week which will also be held at the same venue.
The Lithuanian squad are in Galway as part of month-long festival of Lithuanian culture in Ireland. There will be a host of events around the country allowing Irish people to sample the music, food, art and cultural ways of the Lithuanian people, who have thousands of emigrants living here.
Little however is known about the Lithuanian women’s rugby scene, though Connacht will no doubt be glad of the international opposition ahead of their last game against Ulster.
Connacht rugby is enjoying significant growth throughout the province at the moment. The formation of a women’s side at Our Ladies Boys Club, Galway and Westport R.F.C., in addition to the rejuvenation of Creggs R.F.C. women’s team, shows a keen interest in the women’s game within the province.
The Connacht v Lithuania match will kick off at 2pm at the Sportsground next Saturday (October 20).
