Treasury Holdings, the international real estate company headquartered in Ireland, has given Irish rugby a boost this week by announcing a five-year sponsorship of Irish Colleges rugby. The commitment to rugby at this level will greatly enhance this platform for players who are vying for a place on the Irish national team.
Many players who have come through the Irish Colleges system played for their provinces and Ireland last year, including Paul O’Connell, Bernard Jackman, Marcus Horan, Denis Leamy, Trevor Hogan, Jamie Heaslip, Eoin Reddan and Girvan Dempsey.
The Irish Colleges rugby season is well and truly underway with the Domestic Wednesday Leagues’ Division One and Division Two into their third round this week.
This year the Irish Colleges international Team will play three international fixtures against the Combined Services at the Stoop on Friday, February 1, 2008, the Scottish Universities in Belfast on Friday, February 22 and the English Students at Henley Rugby Club, London on Friday, March 14.
Speaking of the launch of the new sponsorship programme, Treasury Holdings’ chairman, Kevin Kelly, said: “Treasury Holdings is delighted to commence this rugby sponsorship just as the interprovincial games are about to take place on November 20.
“We want to recognise the skill and hard work that the players put in at this level, in a bid to make the international team, while trying to juggle their training and match schedules with study for their respective courses. We are looking forward to working with the IRFU to develop both serious and social rugby in colleges across Ireland.”
Der Healy, IRFU President, said: “The development of rugby in Colleges and Third Level Institutions is an important component of our next Strategic Plan. The recruitment and retention of more adults (male and female) into the game will be a top priority for us.
“Clearly more opportunities to play rugby in College will be a critical part of our strategy. We are delighted that we are in a position to announce our new sponsor, Treasury Holdings, at this time as we embark on our new plan.”
The Irish Colleges Rugby Union incorporates Universities, Agricultural Colleges, and Institutes of Technology, Army and Garda Colleges along with other third level instructions. 39 Universities and Colleges and 750 students are involved at this level covering urban and rural Ireland, both north and south.
