Focus On: Tag In The West

In a brand new series of articles, we take a look at Budweiser Tag all throughout the four provinces. Our first stop will be a visit to the venues in Connacht. Read on for more.

The beautiful West of Ireland is not only a must-see for every visitor to this island but also home to Budweiser Tag Rugby at various venues from its north to its south.

Summer Tag is played in County Mayo at Ballina RFC while the Connacht Provincial Championship will be held at Westport RFC on Saturday, June 14. This will be the first year that these two great venues operate their Tag with the IRFU’s official programme.

Further south along the coast, we come to Galway city where Galway Corinthians RFC and UCG host Tag in a Tag mad town! At Corinthians, there are 72 teams each week enjoying the largest Tag Venue around.

72 teams equates to an average of over one thousand players passing through the gates every Thursday evening. That is the equivalent of a sizable Tag Festival every week! No wonder it sold all its places before the March had even got going.

The inaugural All-Ireland Open Tag Championships will also be held at Corinthians on July 19th. With nearly 100 teams of various grades and from all over the country invited (its an OPEN so EVERYONE is invited – subject to availability of course), this fine day promises to be a fun filled day out for all.

Across town, UCG at Dangan are the newest addition to our Tag family in Galway. Having hosted Tag rugby for some time now, Galwegians are spoilt for choice in this fine city (there are still some registrations available at UCG, by the way so get in while you can). The wealth of experience in running UCG as a Tag venue will ensure everyone has a memorable summer indeed.

Back coastwise, we head to Clifden in Connemara where Connemara RFC will run a Budweiser Beach Tag Festival on June 21. Amongst the expanses of the Connemara strands and shores will be the busy hive of people enjoying all that Budweiser Tag has to offer – sporting activity and a fun packed social day and evening out.

Places, as described here, are prime examples of what makes Budweiser Tag Rugby so great and how much Tag rugby is thriving in the province.
