IRFU President Visits An Ghaeltacht RFC

IRFU President Der Healy paid a successful visit to An Ghaeltacht RFC recently and proposed the idea of a possible tournament for Irish speaking rugby clubs.

On a recent visit to An Ghaeltacht RFC in Carraroe, County Galway, IRFU President Der Healy proposed an annual tournament incorporating all the Irish speaking regions.

An Chorca Duibhne are already well established in Kerry and Donegal development officer John Llewhellin expects the ground work being done in schools in their region to come to fruition in the next year.

Der suggested that an ideal initial meeting ground for An Ghaeltacht RFC and An Chorca Duibhne would be at Thomond Park, possibly at half-time in a Magners League clash and plans are already being put in place for this fixture.

Der was very impressed with the progress which has been made in the small community, with their new all-weather pitch almost like an oasis in the rocky landscape. He was also delighted to be able to meet so many of the younger members of the club and to present some prizes.

It is a village where rugby and GAA go hand in hand and chairman of Carraroe GAA, Sean Mac Donnacha, was also on hand to welcome the IRFU President.

An Ghaeltacht RFC would like to thank Der and his wife Nuala for taking the time to visit their club and extend a warm welcome for their return at anytime in the future.
