Referees Hold Annual Golf Outing

The annual IRFU Referee’s Golf outing took place recently at the picturesque Glasson Golf & Country Club in Co. Westmeath. Referees from all over Ireland took part.

The event is now into its 16th year and was extremely well attended with 62 referees from all four provinces out on the course playing for Eddie Walsh’s captains prize, with a few extra joining up for dinner.

Amongst the attendees were current International referee Alan Lewis, former International referee Donal Courtney, ERC referee Peter Fitzgibbon, and a cross section of current and former referees.

There was a special presentation on the night to Alan Lewis on reaching his 50th Heineken Cup match. The presentation was made by Pat Maher of Heineken Ireland who have been the main sponsor of the Referee outing for a number of years.

Organizers Alan Rowe, Ciaran O’Brien, Denis Templeton, and David McHugh, IRFU, were very pleased with the event: “We are delighted with how the event has grown. It brings together referees from all four provinces in a relaxed atmosphere and is a good chance for newer guys to get to know the old hands. We are especially grateful to Heineken Ireland for their ongoing sponsorship which helps with the event and with our fundraising, which is a very important element of the day” said McHugh.

A total of €;10,000 was raised for Charity through various sponsorships and an auction on the night. The money raised will be divided between the IRFU Charitable Trust, Irish Guide Dogs and Cancer Care.
