Make sure you tune in to Setanta Sports Ireland tonight (Monday) at 9.30pm as the excellent ‘Scrum Queens: Ireland’s Rugby Women’ documentary will be broadcast as part of the ‘Winning Women’ series.
‘Winning Women’ is an eight-part documentary series produced by Athena Media for Setanta Sports. It aims to showcase and celebrate outstanding Irish sportswomen.
Tonight there will be an in-depth look at the Ireland women’s squad and the development and growth in popularity of women’s rugby in Ireland.
Women’s rugby is on a high at present after a very encouraging season at club, provincial and international levels.
Ireland finished fourth in this year’s RBS Women’s Six Nations championship and they claimed third place at last month’s FIRA-AER Women’s European Championship, scoring some excellent tries and blooding a number of new players during the tournaments.
Players, coaches and some previously sceptical male internationals are interviewed during the 30-minute long programme.
Former Leinster, Toulouse and Ireland lock Trevor Brennan has certainly sat up and taken notice of ‘the girls in green.’
“When I heard of women playing rugby, I thought: ‘Jaysus, women with cauliflower ears and broken noses!’ I was probably ignorant to it before I actually went along and saw them play,” Brennan admitted.
“I saw the level that they can play at and saw the skill level. They don’t hold back.”
