IRFU To Run Series Of ELV Seminars

From August 1 of this year, the International Rugby board will be implementing a 12-month global trial of 13 Experimental Law Variations (ELVs). All ELVs will be implemented by the Irish Rugby Football Union in professional and all domestic competition.

However, a decision on the IRFU’s implementation of ELV 17 (‘Pulling down the maul’) at age grade level will be made early next month.

A full list of ELVs and their interpretation can be found here.

To facilitate a smooth implementation of the ELVs into the Irish rugby system, the IRFU, in conjunction with the provincial Branches, will be implementing a series of education initiatives to up skill coaches and referees in the interpretation of the Law variations.

In mid July, the IRFU will be running a series of ELV Seminars for ALL rugby clubs in the four provinces.

By invitation from your Branch, key club coaching staff will be invited to attend a two hour ‘Refereeing and ELV Workshop’, conducted by the IRFU Referee Department.

Venues for these seminars will be confirmed very shortly.

These changes in the laws of the game will have a profound effect on the nature of the game. The IRFU very strongly advise all club coaching co-ordinators to attend their relevant Branch workshop.

Munster – Cork – Monday, July 14 (7.30pm)
Munster – Limerick – Tuesday, July 15 (7.30pm)
Connacht – Galway – Wednesday, July 16 (7.30pm)
Leinster – Dublin – Thursday, July 17 (7.30pm)
Ulster – Belfast – Monday, July 21 (7.30pm)

Branch Development Officers will undergo training during July, to ensure that they can provide expertise to club and school staff at the beginning of the season.

Referees will undergo training through their Branch Association courses.
