IRFU Coaching Courses Continue

The task of coach development is ongoing every year in the IRFU. Last weekend saw the continuation of the Level 2 Assistant Coaches course at Malahide RFC.

This course specifically for assistant coaches at stage 4 rugby was held at Malahide RFC over two days 23rd & 24th August.

The course is aimed at preparing coaches who operate in an assistant (Forwards or Backs) coaches role at 18’s to 20’s and J1 to Senior XV levels (Stage 4 LTPD).

Coaches underwent generic workshops on:

Key Factor Analysis –  Alistair Brown

Learning Styles, Game Appreciation and Mental Imagery.

In addition, rugby specific rugby modules were split into Forward and Backline related workshops.

The Forwards coaches dealt with Scrum (Bryan Hyland), Lineout (Willie Anderson), Restarts (Colin McEntee) and specialist workshops on developing the Front row (Bryan Hyland) and  Lineout throwing (Peter Smyth).

The Backs coaches dealt with Backline attack (Stephen Aboud), Backline defence (Colin Moran), Counter attack (Ian Costello) and specialist workshops on Kicking skills (Richie Murphy) and Scrumhalf passing (David O’Mahony).

Twenty nine coaches attended the course with two international coaches from the Portugese Rugby Union – Francisco Branco & Henrique Garcia also participating.

The coaches are now required to complete the accreditation process by
• logging 60 hours (as assistant) at the appropriate level
• completing a successful practical observation
• producing a written profile of their unit’s strengths & weakenesses
• signing & return the IRFU Child Welfare Document
