IRFU Launches 2008-2012 Strategic Plan

The Irish Rugby Football Union has targeted growth, quality and success as key measures of its new four-year Strategic Plan for Irish rugby. They plan to build on the success of the first Strategic Plan, including growth of player numbers and increasing revenues to 69 million euro by 2012.

The Irish Rugby Football Union today revealed it second Strategic Plan for Irish rugby – Building on Solid Foundations.

The new plan, for the period 2008 to 2012, will build on the success of the first four year plan (Growing the Game – Achieving Success) which led to the number of players increasing from 85,234 to 119,840 (39%) and revenues growing by from 37.35 to 55 million euro (32%) in 2008.

The new plan places emphasis on:

* Provision of quality in all aspects of the domestic game
* Focus on increasing the number of adult players
* Success through winning teams in the professional game
* A 25% revenue growth target to reach 69 million euro by 2012 has also been set

The heart of the new plan is the domestic game programme which was heavily influenced by an extensive market research study commissioned by the IRFU as part of the planning process.

John Hussey, Chairman of the IRFU Management Committee, which was responsible for developing the plan, said: “All of us involved in Irish rugby must continue to challenge ourselves and set ever higher goals in order to maintain and build on Ireland’s position as one of the leading rugby countries in the world.

“The competition in the professional environment is clear for all to see, but our ambition is to provide quality at all levels of the game to continue to build on the foundations of the domestic game, which is the key area for the success of Irish rugby.

“We have an exciting range of new initiatives that we are confident will enable domestic rugby to make great strides over the next four years,” he added.
