Ulster Youngsters Thrive In Training Workshops

A number of top rugby coaches and guest tutors lent their support to the IRFU Ulster Branch Regional Development Programme Education Day at the Institute of Sport in the University of Ulster, Jordanstown, last Sunday.

The Ulster Youth Training Workshops, sponsored by Calor Gas, provide Under-17 age grade players, currently training under the Calor Regional Development Squad (RDS) programme, with a practical opportunity to gain new skills from talented and experienced players and coaches.

The training days also serve as a platform to Regional Development Officers and underage and club coaches, allowing them to up-skill and develop their coaching methods.

Top Ulster coaches held a series of workshops for the players, with Dungannon coach John Andrews focusing on lineout, Ulster prop Justin Fitzpatrick demonstrating scrum techniques, back-line attack training from Ulster skills coach Neil Doak and breakdown skills from Ballynahinch boss Derek Suffern.

Speaking after the event, IRFU Ulster Branch Regional Development Officer Jamie Turkington commented: “The Regional Development Education day has been a huge success, and we are delighted to have had such high profile names associated with the event.

“I would like to thank all of our coaches for their time and hard work with all the teams involved, and also to our sponsors, Calor, who continue to support the development of Youth rugby in Ulster, and without whose help, this event would not have been possible.”

Mark McClements, Sales Manager for Calor, added: “Calor is delighted that through its three-year sponsorship of the Regional Development Programme, Youth teams in Ulster can now have access to state of the art facilities, such as those used (today).

“This is a critical step towards developing and improving the future calibre of the game at all levels.”
