Garryowen’s first AIB League match since the tragic death of Shane Geoghegan saw the club travel to Anglesea Road to face an Old Belvedere side going well in Division One. In a symbolic gesture, Belvo retird their number 3 jersey prior to the game and presented it to Garryowen.
It was a simple gesture, yet it demonstrated that the bonds of rugby transcend the rivalries on the pitch and it was received by Garryowen with much pride.
At a function prior to Saturday’s AIB League Division One game between Old Belvedere and Garryowen at Angelesa Road, Stephen Tormey, President of Old Belvedere RFC, presented visiting Garryowen FC President John Noonan with a number 3 jersey which the home club so graciously retired for the day.
In accepting the jersey on behalf of the family of Shane Geoghegan, John expressed his sincere and hearfelt gratitiude to the host club and indeed all the clubs and supporters throughout Ireland for their solidarity in the past weeks.
Former Old Belvedere and Ireland great Ollie Campbell was among the guests as was Mark Feely who played with both clubs and is a former President of the South Dublin club.
