Buccaneers scored their first AIB League win since November as they ran in five tries during the closing half-hour against a disappointing Terenure College side on Saturday.
AIB LEAGUE: DIVISION ONE: Saturday, February 22
BUCCANEERS 43 TERENURE COLLEGE 11, Dubarry Park
Scorers: Buccaneers: Tries: Marcus Madden, Alex Hayman, Paul Harte, Sean Carey 2, Alan Gaughan; Cons: Alan Gaughan 5; Pen: Alan Gaughan
Terenure College: Try: Alex Dunlop; Pens: Conor Gildea 2
The final scoreline was a touch flattering for Buccs but they turned on the style in the second half with Alex Hayman, Paul Harte, Sean Carey (2) and place-kicker Alan Gaughan all running in tries.
Terenure had the best of the play in the opening half and they should have been ahead at the break, instead of turning around with a 10-8 deficit.
Their captain Alex Dunlop, who is member of Ireland’s AIB Club international squad, muscled his way over for a deserved try.
Conor Gildea missed the conversion but fired over a penalty for an 8-0 lead for the Dubliners.
Although Buccs responded with a converted Marcus Madden try and Gaughan penalty, ‘Nure retook the lead on 54 minutes through Gildea’s boot.
A fine break, led by the Buccaneers forward, teed up Hayman’s try. And with their confidence suitably boosted, the hosts were soon over again when Harte finished off an intercept score.
Moving the ball at pace and profiting from some slick passing, Buccs set up two quick-fire tries for Carey, the second of which came in injury-time.
With the game drifting away from Terenure, they let their heads drop and centre Gaughan crossed the whitewash in deepest injury-time.
Gaughan finished the game with a personal haul of 18 points, boosting his chances of featuring for the Ireland club side next week against England.
