Speaking to RTE News about the homecoming, which saw up to 18,000 people throng Dawson Street and the surrounding areas, IRFU Chief Executive Philip Browne said: “It was fantastic. It was great to see so many people out there.

“Obviously the victory meant a lot to them and it meant a lot to the team and all who are involved in Irish rugby to see that support out there. It was a great occasion.

“Brian O’Driscoll said it himself, that the crowd is the 16th man on the park for the team. We’ve had tremendous support all season and we really appreciate it.

“You could see it, the team really appreciated the support they had at the match in Cardiff and also the efforts that people went to to come out to Dawson Street for the homecoming.”
