With only the Irish and Scottish teams in Magners League action this weekend, the leaders Munster and second-placed Leinster have the opportunity to pull away from the chasing pack.
Munster travel to Scotland on Friday to face Glasgow Warriors, a team they have lost to just once in their last four meetings.
However, the Warriors are unbeaten at Firhill against all Irish opponents since May 2006, so their visitors have a tough ask ahead of them.
Elswhere, on Sunday, Leinster welcome provincial rivals Ulster to the RDS, a ground where they have suffered only one defeat in their last 19 games – against Munster last September.
Although Ulster’s away record is poor, they seem to save their best performances for interpro rivalry, having lost just one of their last six such encounters – to this weekend’s opponents Leinster in December.
The round kicks off with another Scottish-Irish encounter, this time Connacht are the visitors to Murrayfield, the ground where Edinburgh have won their last four Magners League fixtures.
Ominously, Connacht have not won in Scotland since their victory over Border Reivers in September 2006.
