Carey Confirmed As Malone Player-Coach

Malone RFC are pleased to annouce that Ulster-contracted prop Jarleth Carey is to take up the role of player-coach for the 2009/10 season.

Jarleth Carey succeeds Andy Dougan as Malone’s head coach. Dougan is stepping down due to increased business and family commitments but still hopes to assist when time permits.

Ballymoney man Carey has been contracted to Ulster for the past two seasons and is looking forward to this new role.

The 31-year-old is eager to improve on the success that Dougan has brought to the Gibson Park club, with the senior side currently seventh in AIB League Division Two.

Carey said: “It is a great honour to be asked to be coach of Malone and I hope to build on the foundations that Andy has laid.”

Malone are delighted that he has agreed to accept the position of player-coach.

Carey worked for three years as a Youth Development Officer in Derry before his rugby career took off, so coaching is a natural progression for him.

The former Rotherham front rower took up rugby, aged 9, with local club Coleraine and one of his most memorable moments on a rugby pitch was playing alongside his dad in the Coleraine team that contested the 1995/96 Provincial Towns Cup final against Dungannon.
