Bud Light Tag ’09 Off To A Flyer At Belvo

Bud Light Tag got a celebrity kick off in Old Belvedere last night as the RTE Sport team took part in the Mixed Social League. With a Vets league and two full social leagues on a Wednesday night and even more on Thursday night it promises to be a great summer in Belvo.

With extra leagues of Mixed Social now in the mix at Belvo, the first Bud Light Tag game of the season started at the earlier time of 6.40pm with Lansdowne Legends toppling the Flying Crocks and Terenure beating the Vintage Rock’79 team by two points in a tight encounter.

In the next round of Vets match-ups, Greystones Hawks, starting their first season lost out to the Hurricanes but their Seagulls beat the Salmo Sluggers in a great game, 11-7. Icarus Allsorts toppled Lansdowne Lightning by 10 to 4 and finally Stalevo Stallions won their opener against the Wombles. With this first week of Vets tag done and dusted, there were some very enjoyable match-ups to watch indeed.

From 8.10pm, the Mixed Social teams got to get a runaround. The Current Wednesday Mixed Social Champs, Slatterys ran in 18 to Maple Lions‘ 5, The Fear defeating Tag mo Thoin and the Taggables downing fellow newcomers, The Titans.

As group 2 started getting into their stride, Bob Dylan couldn’t have got given us a larger understatement when he said a Hard Rain was Gonna Fall as the sky turned black and opened up with a rapid jab of the stormiest rain shower this author has ever seen this far north or south of the equator.

As quickly as it had arrived, the storm disappeared, with the pleasant weather conditions thankfully returning. As the noise of the rain peetered out, the re-emergence of the sounds of busy Tag rugby matches being enjoyed by all their participants took precedence again and emitted a famously enjoyable atmosphere.

Amongst these games, last year’s Wednesday Mixed Social Runners-Up Hoof Hearted lost 5-6 to one of the O2 teams, G’O2 in the weekly friendly match.

This league is packed with new teams which says it all about the ever growing popularity of not only Bud Light Tag but Old Belvedere RFC as a venue itself. Butter’s All-Star Seven and Swoop Unit chalked up opening night wins against O2 and the Swifties respectively.

Meanwhile the KSN Redbacks beat the ‘star studded’ RTE Sport, featuring the inimitable Marty Morrissey and Joanne Cantwell of ‘Against The Head’ fame.

A gallery of photos sent in to us from last night can be viewed HERE in the very popular Gallery section of irfutag.ie.

Over the course of the next few weeks, all 24 other Bud Light Tag venues will have gotten their seasons up and running. If your team has not booked its place then register online HERE to ensure you do not miss out.

Be part of the real ‘Game of Two Halves’!
