Towns Cup Winners Boyne Enjoy Civic Reception

The recent success of Boyne RFC in winning the Newstalk Provincial Towns Cup was honoured by the Drogheda Borough Council under the auspices of the Drogheda Mayor Frank Maher.

A civic reception for the Boyne squad and the executive committee of the club was held in the aptly named Boyne Valley Hotel & Country Club in Drogheda.

Drogheda Mayor Frank Maher welcomed the Boyne party and was wholesome in his praise for the success that they not only brought to themselves, their families the club but, to the town and its hinterland.

It was the first time, he said, that the beautiful trophy had come to the town and it was ‘very welcome’..

He went on to pay great compliments to the foresight of those who had the courage to bring the town’s two former clubs, Delvin and Drogheda, together to form Boyne RFC.

He pointed out that it was in the very room that was hosting the function and there was a touch of irony in the fact that some of those people were in attendance on this very auspicious occasion.

He stated that the club was now a very important sporting entity in the town and its hinterland. One of the things that he noticed on his canvass was the number of oval shaped balls that were now a feature on all the greens in the estates in the town.

He attributed this to the rise in the popularity of the game along with the wonderful work that Boyne RFC were doing in the schools and among the youth of the area.

He concluded by awarding Boyne RFC a scroll in recognition of their achievement and a beautiful Galway cut glass vase to player-coach and captain Craig McGrath.

John Sheridan, Boyne RFC’s director of rugby, paid tribute to the many people who had worked down through the years to reach this success.

He especially mentioned the players who had strived to win the trophy without success down through the years.

He stated that it was as much for them as it was for the present squad who won the cup.

He concluded by saying that whilst this was ‘a very significant step forward, it would count for nothing if we did not achieve the club’s foremost ambition of going Ssenior next season.’
