Double Header Gets Beach Tag Started

The ‘Sandy Season’ commenced last weekend as the coasts in Kerry and Antrim were alive with the buzz of Bud Light Beach Tag. This ever-growing form of Tag rugby has now expanded into Ulster, bringing the total number of Beach Tag events in the year to five.

The Bud Light Beach Tag season got off to a flyer of a start with a double helping all being staged on the one day.

Muríoch Beach in Dingle, County Kerry and East Strand in Portrush, County Antrim were alive with the buzz of Tag rugby being played by teams from all over.

Dingle, in its second year, saw a fine sunny day with a carnival atmosphere attracting even more teams joining in the Tag fun.

The running of this day went so well that the final result was decided just as the tide started making its way to the foreshore.

Trophies and all were presented at TPs afterwards where the crowd remained focused on all things rugby by cheering the Lions on against the ‘Bokke’ in Saturday’s monumental Test match in Pretoria.

Meanwhile, up on the beautiful Antrim Coast, Portrush’s busy East Strand saw Beach Tag for the first time ever as Ulster’s debut year made quite the impression indeed.

With warm weather, top tunes and a great atmosphere, all the games contested were played in superb spirits, causing many onlookers on this busy beach to set up and stay for the duration of the games as enthusastic spectators along the promenade.

The day’s tournament was won by the Smooth Criminals with runners-up Thundercats losing out in the final. Both teams are regulars at Belfast’s Newforge Country Club venue throughout the summer.

Everybody then got cleaned up for the evening ahead which, courtesy of wonderful hosts Hotel Ramada Portrush, involved some very welcome food, a busy bar and an evening of Lions action which was vociferously supported by all attending.

Photos from the weekend’s events are available to view in the Gallery section of the Tag website.

Registration places are still available for Bud Light Beach Tag at Rosslare Strand in Wexford, Inchydoney in Cork and Enniscrone in Sligo. These are only available online in the Registration Section of IRFUTag.ie
