Ulster Players Making Good Progress With Injury Rehab

Stephen Ferris, Andrew Trimble and David Pollock, amongst others on Ulster’s injury list, are all making good recoveries from their respective injuries, according to the province’s physiotherapist staff.

Stephen Ferris’ Lions tour was cruelly cut short by a medial ligament injury to his right knee when training with Ian McGeechan’s squad on June 8.

On review with a consultant in Belfast last week, a conservative management programme was confirmed for the Grand Slam-winning back rower.

He has commenced a rehab programme at Newforge and is expected to return to training with the Ulster squad in August.

Meanwhile, centre-cum-winger Andrew Trimble successfully underwent right knee surgery on April 30 to correct a long standing patella injury.

His rehab programme has progressed well and to plan, and the 24-times capped Irish international is currently working in the gym on limb and joint strength and function with Ulster’s strength and conditioning coach Jonny Davis.

Trimble will return to impact training through running in the next 14 days.

David Pollock, the captain of the 2007 Grand Slam-winning Ireland Under-20 side, is also recovering from going under the knife.

The talented back rower had successful surgery to his right hip on May 20, repairing a torn labrum at the joint and removing an osteophyte from the femoral head. He will be reviewed by his surgeon on Thursday this week.

To date, Pollock’s rehab has been very controlled to ensure there has been minimal load through the joint, however the Ulster staff expect to be able to push on with strengthening and improving function from next week.

In addition, experienced full-back Bryn Cunningham is recovering well from the fractured cheekbone which he sustained last season, as is versatile forward Ed O’Donoghue who is working his way back from a shoulder injury.
