The dust has settled on the Lions tour and the weary walkers from the Charitable Trust are now back home tanned, toned and with blisters finally popped. Here we take a look back at the walk in pictures.
Walking With Lions – the IRFU Charitable Trust’s walk in South Africa has not just raised the profile of the work done but also some much needed funds to support seriously injured players.
The Walk was a huge success and a rewarding experience for those who took part and you can view the pictures here.
Our regular Walking With Lions blogger kept us up to date with some of the highlights of the tour and has stayed true to the old adage that “what goes on tour, stays on tour”. We include the final instalment here:
Wednesday 1st July
“Another free Day” Most of the group headed off to Robben Island. Excellent tour led firstly by Tabo around the island and then Sparky a former prisoner gave us a tour of the prison and Nelson Mandela’s Cell. After we had dinner on the waterfront followed by a great singsong with our Group taking on the English and Welsh!
Thursday 2nd July
Our third and final walk took us along the Coast from Muizenberg to Boulders bay . Stunning scenery again and beautiful weather. Lunch on the seafront with entertainment provided by local dancers and a stroll around the penguin colony.
Friday 3rd July
We bid a fond farewell to Cape Town and head off to Pretoria to start the final leg of our journey. We arrived at our hotel where we were greeted by various other supporters from England, Wales and Scotland. After Dinner we had another sing off where we of course stole the show and won hands down!
Saturday 4th July.
An early start again takes us out to Soweto Rugby Club where we had a quick lunch and watched some Zulu dancers. A convoy of 60 buses set off together with a police escort to the Coca Cola Stadium(Ellis Park) in Jo’Burg. An enthralling game with a fantastic Victory for the Lions ensured celebrations would take us long into the night.
Sunday 5th July
A free day! For the early risers a trip to Pilanesburg game park where we saw many species of African wildlife. Afterwards a visit to the Sun City resort where we had lunch. Meanwhile back In the Hotel the rest were watching history in the making with Federer wining the Wimbledon title for the 6th time!!! A great day was finished off with Dinner in Crawdaddy’s.
Monday 6th July.
Our last day. Before heading off the brave members of the group took part in a sponsored swim challenge to raise more funds for the Charitable Trust. There was a lot of last minute shopping and we left the hotel at 6pm to face the long Journey home after a fun filled and action packed tour! Well Done to all our Walkers.
