The summer provides a welcome rest for players but coaches are always on the go. The most recent IRFU Coaching Course of the summer was for Assistant Coaches at Level 2. This is one of a series of courses that produce quality accredited coaches at every level of the game in Ireland.
The Assistant Level 2 Coaching Course has just been completed with 27 coaches from the four provinces in attendance.
The two-day, ten-module course was held at the Johnstown House Marriott Hotel.
The tutors who delivered on the course were:
Reggie Corrigan, the newly appointed Leinster scrummaging coach, Colin McEntee, Steve McIvor, Niall Malone, Peter Smyth, Richie Murphy, Alistair Brown, Willie Anderson, Colin Moran, the IRFU’s National Coach Development Officer, and Steve Aboud, the National Coach Development Manager of the IRFU.
All the coaches participated in workshops on:
Long Term Player Development
Integrated Coaching & Developing Decision Makers

Developing Concentration Skills
Role of the Assistant Coach
Split sessions were undertaken for rugby technical workshops for Forward Coaches (Lineout, Scrum, Restarts, Front Row and Hooker – lineout throwing) and Backs Coaches (Backline Attack and Defence, Counter Attack, Scrum Half Passing and Kicking Skills).
Sharing ideas and thoughts was a large aspect of the two days and former representative players such as Munster adn Ireland wing John Kelly, Leinster and Ireland prop Reggie Corrigan, Ulster’s Seamus Mallon, Scott Young, Adam Larkin, Kelvin Leahy and Sarahjane Belton, the former Ireland Women’s captain, brought some unique insights through their experiences.
The coaches who completed course attendance will now pursue the accreditation by fullfilling the following requirments:
1. Production of their Unit Profile
2. Successfully complete Practical Observations
3. Log 60 hours of coaching with a Stage 4 team
