The Greatest Irish Sportsperson

Rugby fans have the chance to vote for one of their own as ‘The Greatest Irish Sportsperson Ever’. There are three iconic Irish rugby players on the nominations list, so get voting now!

Liberty Films and Firebrand Productions are making a new one hour television special called ‘The Greatest Irish Sportsperson Ever!’, to be broadcast on RTÉ One this Christmas.

As a small nation, Ireland has produced an impressive line of great Olympians, footballers, hurlers, rugby players, athletes, boxers, trainers and riders…but who in our pantheon of sporting greats reigns supreme?

And how do the greats of today cut it with the greats of the past?

This programme will count down the Top 10 Irish Sportspeople, as voted by the Irish public and will feature interviews with many of the nominated sportspeople along with their family, friends and coaches as well as a prestigious line up of sports commentators and journalists.

There are three rugby players on the list of nominees: 1948 Grand Slam winner Jack Kyle, Ireland and Lions legend Mike Gibson and 2009 Grand Slam captain Brian O’Driscoll.

Voters can log on to http://www.rte.ie/greatestirishsportsperson and vote for the individual they feel is Ireland’s Greatest Sportsperson Ever…from Sonia O’Sullivan to Padraig Harrington, from John Giles to Christy Ring, from Brian O’Driscoll to Vincent O’Brien.

The web pages feature a shortlist of nominees, compiled with the help of an expert panel of sports writers and commentators, which are designed to help the voters make their choice.

As well as voting for our greatest sportsperson, the public will also have the opportunity to highlight the Most Memorable Sporting Moment as well as the most heartbreaking ‘So Near and Yet So Far Moment’ in Irish sporting history.

Voting opened on Friday, September 4 and closes on Sunday, September 27.
