The Irish Rugby Football Union has announced the appointment of Dr. Eanna Falvey as the new doctor to the Ireland squad.
Dr. Eanna Falvey brings a specialist medical training to the position along with a wealth of experience in sports medicine and specifically in rugby, having worked at the highest level of the game.
A medical graduate of University College Cork, Dr. Falvey was Munster Rugby team doctor between 2003 and 2007. During this time he also worked in hurling, Gaelic football, boxing and athletics.
As part of the IRFU medical structures, he also worked as team doctor to the Ireland Under-21 international squad in 2005 and 2006, the Churchill Cup in 2008 as well as acting as team doctor for the Ireland pre-season camps to Spala.
His time ended with Munster Rugby in 2007 when he moved to Australia to complete his sports medicine training with a sports medicine research fellowship in the University of Melbourne, Olympic Park Sports Medicine Centre and with the medical team of Melbourne-based Aussie Rules team Geelong.
Upon his return to Ireland, he joined the Sports Surgery Clinic in Dublin where he was recently appointed as the Director of Sports Medicine.
He began working with the Ireland squad during the recent pre-season camps.
A keen athlete himself, he is a former international amateur boxer and winner of Irish National Boxing Championships as well as being involved in competitive athletics.
Dr. Falvey will also be supported in his role by Leinster doctor Jim McShane and Ulster doctor Michael Webb at certain times during the international season.
Commenting on the appointment, IRFU Medical Director Dr. Conor McCarthy said: “Dr. Falvey is an excellent appointment as our new national team doctor.
“He has worked at all levels of the game, has personal experience in elite sport and has a superb background and training in sports medicine.
“This position is an important part of the national management team, Dr. Falvey has all the skills to bring this position to the highest level.”
