Sparkes Visit Boosts Carrick Side

Joy Sparkes, the Women’s Regional Development Officer for Ulster Rugby, paid a visit to a women’s training session at Carrickfergus RFC this week to offer some support and guidance to the squad and coaches.

Carrickfergus, who play in Women’s All-Ireland League Division 2, have suffered a number of heavy defeats recently and the coaching team was keen to gain some assistance to try and improve on performance and general morale among the squad.

The Carrick girls have had a difficult start to the 2009/10 season, with a large drop in player numbers due to injury and retirements.

Despite the difficulties experienced in the senior squad, Carrickfergus boast an up-and-coming Youths section which is starting to show good progress, and this is particularly encouraging for the future of the senior side.

Around 25 girls from the club’s Youths and Adult sections turned out for the coaching session with Ulster Rugby’s Joy Sparkes which focused of ball presentation and tackling techniques.

After the session, Joy commented: “I was very impressed with the girls’ enthusiasm here this evening – they have shown a real commitment to improving their performance.

“I hope that my visit will give the whole squad and coaching staff the boost that they so badly needed and let’s hope we see the result of their commitment in their upcoming games and that the club will soon return to the position where it belongs.

“I would like to wish the girls all the best for their Division 2 North game against DCU this Sunday afternoon.”

The Ulster Branch of the iRFU will continue to support the Carrickfergus ladies, as well as any other teams in need of assistance, and looks forward to following their progress throughout the season.

There are games up and down the country in the Women’s All-Ireland League this Sunday, so why not get out and support your local side?
