Letterkenny RFC hosted the second County Donegal Under-16 Blitz of the season last Thursday (November 19), Read on for further details.
Despite the terribly wet conditions, all of the teams played positive rugby, with minimal kicking and a general intent to run the ball.
This made for compulsive viewing, and organisers and spectators were treated to an attractive brand of rugby throughout the day.
In total, six schools took part in the blitz and the competition was split into two pools.
Results from the previous blitz were added to the day’s scores, and it was St. Columba’s College from Stranorlar who emerged as the eventual Cup winners.
The team showed great reserve throughout and produced some top notch performances to take the title.
In a bid to add an extra element of competition to the day’s proceedings, the Under-16 Plate was also up for grabs. The team who finished top of Pool 2 in the Cup competition automatically won the Plate.
In a tightly-contested series of matches, Mulroy College from Milford were the victors in this pool; a massive achievement for the school who had never before brought rugby silverware home to their school,
Organisers of the blitz thanked Letterkenny Rugby Club for their continued support and use of their quality pitches, as well as the dedicated teachers and coaches of all teams, whose commitment is greatly appreciated, and referee Francois Badenhorst who gave up his time to help referee the blitz.
