Floodlit Rugby Arrives At ‘Salmo

Forty years after Palmerston FC had the proud distinction of holding the first ever rugby game under floodlights in the Republic of Ireland at their Clonskeagh grounds, De La Salle Palmerston FC are now delighted to announce the first ever floodlit game at Kirwan Park this Friday night (kick-off 7.30pm).

Honorary life member, past president and current J3 manager Stan Bolton, will have the honour of turning on the Kirwan Park floodlights, which is a fitting tribute to the man who has served De La Salle Palmerston and in particular junior rugby with an unrivalled enthusiasm, win, lose or draw.

Stan is in his 82nd year now and has many a tale to tell of those floodlit games in Clonskeagh, now stories from Kirwan Park under lights will be added to his repertoire!

Former club captain Norman Byrne, who is also the current J3 coach, will lead his team out with a special mascot for the night, his son Luke who plays with the DLSP Under-10 team, when the DLSP J3s play Naas in a league game.

This latest development at Kirwan Park is part of an ambitious development programme that has taken place at the club over recent seasons.

The investment in the installation of match quality floodlighting for the first and second pitches, along with the training areas, was done in conjunction with a successful lotto grant and fund raising by club members, at a cost well in excess of €;200,000.

In particular, special thanks must be mentioned to Senior Vice President Denis Murphy, who steered the project committee over the last 18 months, to this proud moment where the facilities at Kirwan Park now equal the best in club rugby in Leinster.
