Garryowen Unveil New All Weather Pitch

It was a gala occasion at Dooradoyle last Friday night for the official opening of Garryowen FC’s new all weather pitch.

Garryowen FC was founded in 1884 and is celebrating its 125th year. Past players, captains, chairmen, trustees, executives, members and friends across a number of generations gathered as the new surface was presented to the public for the first time.

IRFU President John Callaghan and Garryowen club captain Conan Doyle performed the unveiling in the presence of  Peter Power, Minister of State, and representatives of Limerick City Council, Limerick County Council and the Garda Siochana.

John Callaghan has strong links with the Light Blues having accompanied them to Languedoc in 2007 as liaison officer for the IRFU during the 2007 World Cup in France.

A great Armagh clubman himself, John went on to recognise the efforts of the adult players, coaches, members, parents, underage players, fundraisers and volunteers who continuously support the club ethos within the community.

The 3G pitch is both IRB and FIFA approved and is suitable for all sports including rugby, GAA, soccer, Tag and team training.

Both ends of the playing spectrum took the opportunity to show their skills on a bright, crisp evening.

Under age secretary Janette Sheehan is to be commended for organising 10 under age teams for a mini rugby festival before hand and not to be outdone, the Veterans aka Garryowen Fallen Stars took on the Limerick Leprechauns afterwards

The players pictured left may have wished for such a perfect pitch to play on when they helped found the club all those years ago, but they will recognise the club spirit that has delivered such a wonderful facility to the members and to Limerick.

An online booking facility will be available shortly.
